Would You Fill Your Wrinkles With Blood?

Looking for a smooth complexion without any artificial injectables? Good news! The secret to youthful skin is already coursing through your veins. Nicknamed the “Vampire” face lift, Selphyl is a new procedure that harvests platelet-rich plasma (PRP) from your own blood to inject in your face and fill out wrinkles and lines. While this beauty treatment has nothing to do with actual blood-sucking vampire bites, it may give your skin eternal youth. We spoke with Lauren Zeifman, RPA-C and founder of Manhattan-based aesthetic center Park Avenue Solutions, on why her patients love the treatment so much.
HOW DOES SELPHYL WORK?
First, blood is drawn from any part of your body and placed in a centrifuge for six minutes to separate the nutrient-rich platelets, which are then injected in your skin the same day. "We physically inject the platelets into your skin because they are responsible for cell regeneration," says Lauren. These platelets contain an array of proteins, enzymes, and hormones that stimulate tissue growth. The procedure takes less than 30 minutes total, and patients begin to see results within a few days. Side effects include a couple of hours of mild swelling and bruising at the injection site, and patients can expect results to last approximately three months. But the worst side effect is the dent on your wallet. Prices can range from $1500 to $2000 per treatment.
WHERE DOES SELPHYL WORK BEST?
The treatment is most widely used around the periocular region (the area around the eyes) to fill in hollow under-eyes or to plump crow’s feet. "It's more about the area of concern than the age of a patient. I've treated women of all ages from their twenties on," reveals Lauren.
HOW LONG DO RESULTS LAST?
Initially, patients get two or three treatments in the first year to test the treatment’s compatibility on their skin, then come in for treatments every three months to perpetuate cell regeneration. "Additional treatments can vary depending on your personal results," explains Lauren. "The blood and viability of the platelets affect how dramatic your results will be." Regardless of blood type, results are subtle and natural-looking with PRP—you’ll notice fewer fine lines, and wrinkles will look softer and skin plumper.
IS SELPHYL AN ALTERNATIVE TO BOTOX OR FILLERS?
Selphyl and Botox are not the same. To smooth out fine lines, Botox stops muscle function when injected, while Selphyl acts more like a filler. Selphyl’s PRP fills up wrinkles like fellow plumpers collagen and hyaluronic acid (the main ingredient in Restalyne and Juvaderm), but they work in opposite ways. The older injectable fillers temporarily plump the skin, while PRP encourages long-term plasma growth on a cellular level, and gives a more natural effect on the surface of the skin. "With PRP, your body absorbs the fluid and keeps regenerating cells," explains Lauren. "That's why patients see better results with each treatment." And since Selphyl also has no allergy risk (which can be a problem with hyaluronic acid and collagen), this "organic" option might be your best bet. If you're curious about the treatment, Lauren suggests visiting Selphyl online to locate a licensed practitioner near you.

Beauty Detox: Man Magnet Almond Milk

Beauties, are you looking to snag a man this Valentine's Day? A healthy diet won't just improve your skin and slim your figure, some foods can actually make you smell more attractive to the opposite sex!  "Almonds are an ancient symbol of fertility and have a sweet fragrance that may act as an aphrodisiac to the opposite sex," explains Kim. And if that isn't enough to get you reaching for a handful, almonds are also one of the most nutritious nuts for you. They are rich in fiber and contain a ton of good-for-you omega-3 fatty acids to reduce wrinkles and plump up your skin (and who doesn’t want to impress a guy with a beautiful, glowing complexion?). They're also high in magnesium, which is essential for healthy bones, blood flow, and getting a better snooze! "Making your own, fresh almond milk at home is much better for you," says Kim. "Unlike the store-brought variety, fresh almond milk doesn't contain any preservatives. Use it in place of regular milk in smoothies, cereal, or granola." And if almonds aren’t your thing, try using hazelnuts instead.

Homemade Almond Milk

Ingredients:
  1. 2 cups raw almonds (soaked overnight)
  2. 2 ½ cups filtered water
  3. Stevia or dates, to sweeten to your taste (be sure to buy whole dates and remove the pits yourself. Pitted dates are more processed and may even contain added sugar and preservatives)
Directions:
Rinse the soaked nuts well with a strainer. Place the soaked nuts and the water in a blender and mix on high until smooth. Pour the mixture through a cheesecloth into a separate container. Squeeze all the liquid out of the cloth with your hands (so you get all the milk out), and discard all the nut pulp and nut fiber. If you are in a rush, pour the liquid through a fine strainer.
Do a quick rinse of the blender, and put the strained milk back in. Add the stevia or dates to sweeten to your taste, or leave it out altogether if you like your milk plain. This almond milk will last for up to two days in the refrigerator.

Diet Foods That Don't Work

Nonfat, sugar-free, zero calories. You may think that diet foods with these labels are shortcuts to slimming down, but this isn’t always the case. Just like diet drinks, diet foods often do you more harm than good. We spoke with Washington, D.C.-based nutritionist JJ Smith, author of Lose Weight Without Dieting or Working Out, to find out why we should stay away from these weight loss traps.
When you're perusing the supermarket aisle, foods with nonfat and calorie-free labels can be extremely tempting. The promise of being able to eat what you want without putting on weight is a dieter’s dream. However, these weight loss products aren’t as healthy as they sound. "The main problem with diet foods is that they still contain ingredients that are bad for you, even if the label says there’s no fat. Manufactures don't want to make food that doesn't taste good, so they add sugar to give it flavor," warns JJ. Conversely, if a product claims to be calorie or sugar-free, it will probably contain more fat, salt, or artificial ingredients. According to JJ, companies make one claim and then use other ingredients to add flavor and ensure that people will continue to buy the product. It's a tricky cycle that traps people into purchasing the same product over and over again, especially because they’re not losing any weight and still need to diet.
"Sugar-free cookies, fat-free dressings, and nonfat yogurt are some of the worst offenders," warns JJ. Sugar-free cookies became popular through brands like Weight Watchers. If you check the label, these “guiltless” treats contain ingredients such as fructose, glucose, and corn syrup (all of which are sugar and turn into fat if they’re not burned off). "Because of the sugar-free label, people assume that they can eat as many as they want. Then after finishing a whole box, they wonder why their pants are too snug," says JJ. Nonfat dressings and yogurt are also diet sabotagers in disguise because they typically contain an extremely high amount of preservatives. "While the yogurt may not contain any fat, there are so many artificial flavors added to make it taste good that the probiotics—which is the good part of yogurt—are basically useless.”
Many diet foods also claim to be low calorie, which JJ describes as a label trap. "Calorie tables are extremely misleading," cautions JJ. "The important thing to look for is the type of calorie, not the amount. While the table says there are only two grams of sugar, there may be six grams of bad fat." A healthy diet depends on a variety of foods that help your body to function. By replacing whole, raw foods (such as fruit and vegetables) with diet foods, you are cheating your body of essential vitamins and minerals, and filling it with artificial flavoring that will clog up your body and turn into fat.
JJ's advice? Swap all of your diet foods for fresh fruit and vegetables. Eat Greek yogurt with no extra flavoring and fresh berries, and make your own dressing from lemon and balsamic vinegar. By cutting out the diet foods and eating whole-fat foods moderately, you'll not only improve your chances of living longer and looking better, you'll find that you lose weight without having to work out! "Be mindful of what you're putting in your body, and always read the ingredient list!" she adds.

Beauty Tips for the Perfectionist

Do you consider yourself a little obsessive when it comes to your beauty collection? With spring cleaning in full swing, it's time to put a little order and structure into your regimen. From color-coded brushes to quirky organizing habits, we’ve got the perfectionist's checklist to make sure your routine gets an A+ in management.
SHELF LIFE
Most skin care aficionados have their regimen down pat, but they still have to rifle through boxes of bottles and elixirs. Take the sorting out of your routine and line up your seasonal skin care on your counter chronologically. Once you’ve physically set the products in order, you can go through them factory-line style. It will help cut down the morning rush!
PILLS, PILLS, PILLS
You're advised by experts and editors to take every beauty supplement in the book, but how can you remember to take your omega/flax/olive/fish oil/rosehip/vitamins without feeling overloaded? A little forethought and a plastic bag can help. Take 15 minutes every Sunday to prepackage all of your vitamins and supplements for the week into purse-sized Ziploc bags. In one swish and swallow, you get your daily dose of inner beauty.
FAIR WARNING
Perfect beauty upkeep requires time management. Schedule bi-monthly manicures and pedicures with consistent monthly dates, and keep track of any facial or massage appointments by requesting quarterly calls from your spa. For your day-to-day routine, perform your bi-weekly mask treatments three days apart from one another. If it's on the calendar, do it!
IMAGINATION ARCHIVES
Bombarded with inspiration but not sure how to organize it all? Create a blank checklist document in your word processor for any online links, images, and tutorial ideas that intrigue you. When you've tried the look, check off the item and move the content to bottom of the page. Set a goal of two new looks per week.
BRANDED BRUSHES
In a perfect world, all of our makeup brush handles would look perfectly alike. Realistically, that’s not that case—most gather their applicators from various sources over time. But if you’re a stickler for uniformity, unite your diverse brush kit with color! Use acrylic paint or nail lacquer to mark the ends of all your brush handles using whichever hue you prefer. The colored tips automatically unify your collection, and you’ll always know which brushes are yours.
SYSTEMIC SETUP
How many times have you organized and reorganized your makeup drawer(s)? Don’t lie—it’s probably more than you can count on your fingers. That’s the fun of amassing a curated cosmetic collection! For the most functional setup, organize your stash by products (eyeliners vs. lipsticks). For a more visual statement, group your pots, pans, sticks, and wands by color or brand. Whichever method you choose, remember that consistency is key.

Wake Up Beautiful!

Photo: Denis Vrublevski/Shutterstock.com
Smudged nail polish, smeared makeup, and bad breath? Even if you prep before bed you can wind up with beauty blunders in the AM. We know how irritating it is to wake up from a peaceful snooze only to find your sheets stained and all of your beauty routine gone to waste. We've rounded up solutions for the most common mishaps so you can rest easy and welcome the sun looking gorgeous!
SMUDGED NAIL POLISH
Caution: wet paint! Hate when you think your manicure has dried only to wake up with sheet prints and smudges? Although your fingertips may feel dry to the touch in minutes, complete hardening takes over an hour. To be safe, use a fast-dry top coat and be sure to paint your nails two hours before hitting the hay.

TANNER STAINS
To avoid bronzer or self-tanner stains on your clothes, it's wise to apply the golden glow at night. But how can you make sure the hint of tint doesn't rub off onto your sheets? After the fake bake dries on your skin, apply a light layer of baby powder to absorb any excess moisture and leave your skin smooth and soft.

WRINKLES
Although you may think a peaceful slumber helps relax facial muscles, stressful dreams can cause wrinkles to form on your face while you snooze. Zap these fine lines with a healthy moisturizer packed with oxygen, vitamins, and hyaluronic acid such as Kate Somerville's Dermal Quench Liquid Lift. The gentle foam works like an instant shot of botox!

MAKEUP TRANSFER
Are your pillowcases covered with dark smudges from makeup leftovers? Your cleanser probably isn't strong enough! Use an oil-based makeup remover around the eyes to help break down particles, ensuring you wash away every bit of liner and mascara without causing breakouts.

BAD BREATH
Even if you brush your teeth before you hit the sheets, you are bound to wake up with morning breath. While there is no cure for that funky taste, there are methods to reduce the odor. After brushing, be sure to floss and swish mouthwash. This will dislodge any small particles stuck between teeth. But the most important step? Scrub your tongue with your tooth brush or use a tongue scraper to remove bacteria from the surface.

The Next 5 Trends in Eco Beauty

Ready for a greener routine? The natural beauty category has grown exponentially in recent years, and many are hopping on the bio-fueled train to a cleaner beauty regimen. Today, research and technology has given these eco all-stars an advantage over standard products. “If I don’t think it works well, I don’t sell it, no matter how pure or pretty it is,” vows organic beauty expert and Spirit Beauty Lounge founder Spirit Demerson. Her online boutique has evolved into the premiere digital destination for luxury eco beauty products, and the store has launched some of our favorite hand-made indie brands. We chatted with Spirit to discover the next five big things happening in the naturals category. Trust us, the future of earth-friendly beauty is anything but granola.

Eco meets high-tech! Stem cell research has already shown promising results in the skin care sector, but stem cells derived from plants such as apple, edelweiss, and argan can become game-changers in the industry. These special cells have increased potency, purity, and efficacy on the skin, and work to promote cell turnover and overall health. “We’re also introducing the technology to hair care and makeup! I’m really excited about their potential,” says Spirit.

Kitchen produce has been the basis of DIY beauty recipes for generations, and now skin care is getting a molecular boost from potent superfruits and vitamin- and mineral-rich waters from around the world. Infusions and extracts from fruits such as açaí, goji, and blueberry plump up wrinkles and fine lines—“It’s like organic Jamba Juice for your skin!” says Spirit.

Nails and lips are already having a serious beauty moment, and green gals don’t have to miss out on the pigment-rich trend! “We’re seeing so many breakthroughs in non-toxic nail and lip color technology that are making your favorite lip and nail polishes even better,” exclaims Spirit. Your earth-conscious self can now wear every color of the rainbow!

The “oil-free” era is over. High grade, sustainably-sourced organic plant, seed, fruit and nut oils are coming from all over the world—Brazil, Morrocco, Senegal, and South Africa. They’re antioxidant rich, nourishing, and luxurious, and they help cure—not cause—breakouts! Luxury organic face oils make the best all-in-one moisturizer, serum and makeup primer—and Spirit is sure women with all different skin types will start using them in 2012. “Baobab seed oil, for example, is a wonderfully luxurious, anti-aging ingredient from the ancient 'Tree of Life' and it’s just now popping up in serums and creams.”

Many perfumes on the market are mislabeled “eco” and “natural” but actually contain phthalates, a controversial chemical that is potentially harmful to the body. So what’s a scent-loving Beauty to do? Go back to the basics. Pure essential oils and extracts have become the new sophisticated aroma, housed in gorgeous packaging akin to your department-store favorites. “True-to-nature scents such as neroli, jasmine, bergamot, and tuberose are incredibly popular,” says Spirit.

Beauty Detox: Diet-Friendly Dressing

Beauties, have you ever looked at the ingredient list on your fat-free dressing and read a bunch of names you don't understand? Although the label may read calorie-free or 0% fat, what it should really be saying is: This dressing is a trick! Store-bought salad dressings are one of the worst contenders in the misleading label race, and are actually full of preservatives, sugar, and chemicals—all of which cause weight gain, pimples, and unbalanced hormones. This week celebrity nutritionist Kimberly Snyder gives us a recipe for avocado dressing, a simple way to make your own topping without all the preservatives! "This dressing uses avocado as the main source of fat, so it's actually fat that's good for you" says Kim. "It works to plump your skin, contains lots of fiber so it's very filling, and is full essential minerals such as potassium."

Avocado Dressing

Ingredients:
  1. 1 avocado
  2. 1 small garlic clove, minced
  3. ¼ cup filtered water
  4. 1 Tbsp fresh dill
  5. 2 drops liquid Stevia
  6. ½ tsp Celtic sea salt
Directions:
Cut the avocado in half, scoop out the flesh, chop into large pieces, and put into a blender. Add in the rest of the ingredients and mix until creamy and smooth. If you like your dressing a little runnier, feel free to add more water. This dressing can be used as a dip for vegetable sticks or tossed with greens for a fantastic salad. It will last in your refrigerator for one to two days.

Belli Acne Clearing Wash

Raging gestation hormones can result in blemishes and breakouts. The gentle cleanser contains lactic acid which exfoliates, lemon peel oil which brightens, and antioxidants such as green tea extract and cucumber—which fight free radicals in the dermis.

Beauty Detox: Wrinkle Fighting Sweet Potatoes

We love the vibrancy of orange, and it's been named the color of 2012. But did you know that foods of the same hue can help slow down the aging process and provide you with important vitamins? These vegetables—including carrots and oranges—are high in beta carotene (it's what gives them their color), which is one of the highest forms of vitamin A. Celebrity nutritionist Kimberly Snyder's recipe for Italian style sweet potatoes is a great way to get your fill of the vitamin. "Sweet potatoes also contain carotenoids, which act as powerful anti-aging ingredients," says Kim. Carotenoids can only be absorbed through food, and also help prevent heart disease. "They are also high in vitamins B6 and C—both of which accelerate collagen production to maintain your skin’s elasticity," explains Kim. "Plus, they're full of magnesium and iron, which helps maintain a glowing, beautiful complexion."

Italian Style Sweet Potato

Ingredients:
  1. 2 pounds organic sweet potatoes, cut into 2-inch chunks
  2. 2 Tbsp olive oil
  3. 2/3 Tbsp fresh oregano, chopped
  4. 1/2 Tbsp fresh rosemary, chopped
  5. Cayenne pepper, to taste (optional)
  6. ½ tsp Celtic sea salt
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Toss the cubed potatoes with the olive oil, oregano, rosemary, cayenne pepper, and sea salt in a glass baking dish. Bake in the oven for around 1½ hours, or until the cubes are cooked through and crispy on the outside. While baking, check occasionally and gently stir as needed.

How to Care for Your Tattoo

Photo: Ron Chapple Studios/Thinkstock
These days, so many Beauties are sporting ink masterpieces. But keeping the artwork fresh means treating the area with extra TLC. Even if you want to cover or remove an old design, it’s important to understand how treatments and products could effect your surface. We chatted with New York City-based dermatologist Jeannette Graf M.D., about the steps you can take to ensure your beautiful ink doesn't turn into a messy mistake.

LOVE IT!

After you’ve been freshly inked, it’s important to take care of the skin for proper healing. "A good tattoo artist will give proper post-procedure instructions, but you’re usually instructed to remove your bandage after a few hours and apply antibiotic ointment." explains Dr. Graf. Be sure to leave the bandage on for at least two hours and then wash the area. "Use your hand to clean the area with a mild, unscented antibacterial soap and water—avoid rubbing the skin dry and pat gently instead," says Dr. Graf. Next, apply a thick coat of vitamin A and D enriched ointment, which will keep the surface moist and protect against infection. After about a week, you can switch to a dye-free, fragrance-free lotion such as Lubriderm or Eucerin. Since you shouldn’t completely submerge your ink in water, avoid baths and swimming pools and stick to showers for two to three weeks. Another important tip? "Wear loose-fitting, soft clothing to avoid rubbing and irritation," says Dr. Graf. Avoid elastics, which can pull and spread the fresh ink.
When you first get a tattoo you’ll notice the skin will begin to flake, peel, and maybe even scab. Do not scratch or pick! This is a normal part of the healing process and will only last a few days. Try to avoid direct sun-exposure for two weeks after getting your new tattoo because the UV rays can fade your new ink. After the initial 14-day shade-a-thon, always apply at least an SPF 30 when you are out and about.

LOATHE IT!

Tattoos are meant to be permanent, so saying buh-bye to your body art isn't a painless process. Tattoos get dull and fade over time on their own but they do not disappear so you need to consider removal options. "Fade creams are unlikely to work and if you’re serious about having a tattoo removed,  then laser option is your best bet," advises Dr. Graf. "Before laser was available dermatologists used dermabrasion to slough off the color—unfortunately it left severe scarring. The best options for your skin today are the Q-switched ruby and Nd YAG lasers.” Just like sun rays can fade your tattoo, these laser emit wavelengths of light in short pulses that deconstruct the pigment with low risk of scarring. But be warned: Each zap is unpleasant and the sessions can be pricey as more than one treatment is usually needed. If you’re looking for a less drastic daily alternative, there are a number of camouflage makeups which can mask tattoos well. "The formulas are waterproof, making them perfect options for swimming and sweating," says Dr. Graf, who recommends Covermark and Dermablend products.

Best Bar Soap for Your Skin Type

Photo: iStockphoto/Thinkstock
Not a fan of body washes? Traditional bar soaps may not be as popular as their beady-bubbly counterparts, but they work just as well to clear up complexion issues. We know each Beauty has a special skin type, so we rounded up a few of our favorite options for each major woe.

SENSITIVE: Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar

Need extra gentle cleansing? Cetaphil has been a cult classic for decades because the mild formula is free of any harsh detergents or ingredients that can irritate your skin. You can even use the bar on your face!

ACNE-PRONE: Aveeno Clear Complexion Cleansing Bar

Banish embarrassing body blemishes with this drugstore must-have. The soap’s salicylic acid will help dry out oily areas such as back and shoulders, while soy replenishes dehydrated skin.

DRY: Dove Beauty Bar

For deep nourishment, look no further than this budget-friendly favorite. Made up of ultra-moisturizing ingredients such as coconut acid, this small bar will keep you silky smooth from head-to-toe.

DULL: Lather Orange Peel Soap

All natural exfoliators such as citrus fruits—like the oranges included in this soap—will gently help turn over dead skin cells to reveal a brighter, more even-toned surface.

The Best Smelling Self-Tanners

iStockphoto/Thinkstock
Ready, set, glow! Getting color the safe way doesn't have to stink. While many self-tanners produce a golden effect, they also come with a funky odor. The reason for this chemical aroma? Self-tanners contain dihydroxyacetone (or DHA), which creates the browning effect on the skin surface, but smells pretty awful. And because of your body’s natural warmth, the stench can really start to stink a few hours after you've applied the bronzer. Nowadays, many companies have effective ways to mask the odor so you can feel confident your faux glow is a complete secret. Check out our Top 3 yummy-smelling self-tanners.
CLARINS Radiance-Plus Self Tanning Cream-Gel
If you’re looking for a subtle sun-kissed flush on your face, try this cult-classic. The golden serum absorbs quickly and has a faint, but tolerable fragrance that actually reminds of us a traditional moisturizer.
ST. TROPEZ Self-Tan Bronzing Lotion
It is no surprise that Hollywood's favorite bronzing brand makes our list! The easy-to-apply, long-lasting formula deepens your natural glow over a few hours and won't leave an orange tint. But best of all: The lotion has a fresh, clean perfume.
LORAC SelfTANtalizer Body Bronzing Gradual Self-Tanner
While a couple of our favorite powder bronzers smell like chocolate (thanks to their natural cocoa additives), Lorac’s tanning gel has a similar dessert-inspired scent. We think it’s the perfect sweet base to layer on your new spring scent.

Beauty Detox: Bikini-Friendly Breakfast

Photo: Olga Miltsova/Shutterstock.com
Are you bikini ready? Summer is fast approaching, and toning up from head-to-toe can be tough! Beginning the day with a healthy, nutritious breakfast is essential to maintaining a balanced diet, and sets the tone for the rest of your daily meals. Celebrity nutritionist Kimberly Snyder's recipe for raw rolled oat cereal fills you up, doesn't contain any sugar, and is made primarily of oat groats—a good-for-you grain that will help you to slim down!
Oats (in their raw form) are one of the most nutritious grains to eat. "They help to fill you up so you won't be reaching for an unhealthy snack mid-morning, are high in fiber, and contain a variety of minerals," explains Kim. Best enjoyed cold, this breakfast is perfect for those mornings when you’re looking for a refreshing alternative to a hot dish. "Oats contain vitamins E and B which provide your body with plenty of antioxidants and help it to process fats," says Kim. "They're also packed full of magnesium, zinc, and calcium, all of which help your body to burn fat, maintain healthy bones, and keep sugar cravings at bay!"

Raw Rolled Oat Cereal

Ingredients
  • ½ cup raw organic oat groats soaked overnight and rinsed well (if you can't find oat groats, use steel cut oats instead)
  • ½ avocado
  • ½ tsp Stevia
  • 1 to 2 Tbsp cold filtered water, as needed
  • Pinch of high quality sea salt (optional)
Directions
Place the soaked oats and avocado in a food processor and blend. Add the sea salt and Stevia and mix well. If you prefer your oats thick and chunky, you can nix the water altogether. Otherwise, add one tablespoon of water to thin the mixture, and a second tablespoon as needed.

Beauty Detox: Vitamin-Packed Veggies

Ensuring your body receives the proper amount of nutrients can be tough in today's busy world. An easy way to make sure you're getting everything you need is to whip up a batch of celebrity nutritionist Kimberly Snyder's east-west baked vegetables. Veggies help maintain your weight, provide you with plenty of energy, contain a wide variety of vitamins and minerals, and keep you fuller, longer! "The huge selection of fresh vegetables in this dish means you'll get a dosage of zinc, potassium, manganese, iron, and calcium," explains Kim. "These are all necessary for shiny hair, strong nails, and healthy bones." The delicious dish also uses tamari—a soy sauce that doesn't contain wheat or gluten like regular soy sauce does—and coconut oil, which is cholesterol-free. Cook it on the weekend so you have enough leftovers for side dishes and lunch for the rest of the week!

East-West Baked Vegetables

Ingredients
  • 3 to 4 carrots, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 2 large sweet potatoes, cut into chunks
  • 1 small cauliflower, cut into 1/2 inch florets
  • 2 large zucchini, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 5 cups bok choy, chopped into 1-inch pieces
  • 3 stalks of asparagus, cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 3 Tbsp fresh parsley
  • 1 ½ Tbsp fresh rosemary
  • 1/4 cup low sodium tamari (look for one labeled gluten-free)
  • 2 Tbsp coconut oil
  • High quality sea salt (optional)
  • Freshly ground black pepper (optional)

Ever wonder how healthy your daily lunch is? Eating out can mean a variety of fatty foods. Burgers and burritos may be yummy, but they're not doing your body any favors. Packing your own lunch may seem time consuming, but it will ensure you don't over indulge on unnecessary calories. So, which culinary staple do we turn to? The sandwich of course! It tastes delicious and it’s quick to prepare—even in the work kitchen! Celebrity nutritionist Kimberly Snyder's open faced beauty sandwich is full of ingredients that will make your skin glow and put you on the track to a healthier lifestyle. "Avocado’s easily digestible monounsaturated fats nourish the skin from within, keeping it supple and youthful," explains Kim. "The tomato adds lycopene (which helps prevent heart disease and cancer, and improves your eyesight) and sprouts give the sandwich a boost of enzymes and amino acids." It's also important to be choosy about your bread. "Gluten-free bread is always a better option—many of us have digestive issues from gluten sensitivities that we don’t even know about!" says Kim.

Heart-Healthy Sandwich

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 slice of gluten free millet bread or another gluten free bread
  • Stone-ground mustard
  • ½ avocado, sliced
  • 2 to 3 thin tomato slices
  • Cayenne pepper
  • High quality sea salt (to taste)
  • Clover sprouts
DIRECTIONS
Toast the bread lightly, then spread on the mustard, avocado and tomato. Sprinkle with cayenne pepper and sea salt (to taste), top with clover sprouts, and enjoy!

Beauty Detox: Nuts for Nuts!

Rather than buying an unhealthy, fatty dip or dressing for your next picnic, why not make your own? Celebrity nutritionist Kimberly Snyder shares her recipe for nut paté, a delicious dip that is full of collagen-building, antioxidant-filled ingredients. "Turmeric acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory antioxidant that aids in digestion of fats," explains Kim. "Lemon adds collagen-building vitamin C, and nutritional yeast provides many of the B-complex family of vitamins, which are important for energy and shiny, healthy hair.” This tasty paté is also a great way to get your fill of omega-3 rich nuts without dousing them in sugar or honey.

Beauty Nut Paté

INGREDIENTS
  • 2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 ½ Tbsp low sodium tamari
  • 1 small organic zucchini, chopped (about ¾ cup)
  • 1-inch piece of ginger root, peeled and grated
  • 1 small garlic clove or ½ medium clove, finely chopped
  • 1 heaped Tbsp chopped white onion
  • 1/8  tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 heaped Tbsp nutritional yeast
  • ½ tsp turmeric
  • ½ cup pumpkin seeds
  • ½ cup sunflower seeds
  • ½ cup almonds
DIRECTIONS
Soak the almonds, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds overnight and rinse well before using. Put the lemon juice and tamari in a food processor and blend well. Then, add the zucchini, ginger, garlic and onion and blend again. Lastly add the cayenne pepper, nutritional yeast and turmeric and blend until smooth.
Add the seeds and nuts once the liquid mixture is smooth, and blend again. Continue to push the mixture down the sides of the blender to keep it moving. If your blender is weak, you may have to chop the nuts up before adding them to the liquid mixture to ensure that it blends well. Enjoy by scooping on top of a green salad, or as a dip.

You'll Never Guess Which Kitchen Ingredients Are in This DIY Mask!

Now that October's in full swing, we're excited for the chilly weather, ready for the feasts to arrive, and getting our skin care in check. An abrupt climate change can do strange things to your complexion, but we've been experimenting with a DIY mask that uses only handful of autumn's most notable spices. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and honey—nope, we're not talking pies, we're talking skin. The mixture of these ingredients not only smells divine, it acts as an anti-inflammatory for sudden breakouts. Honey is a well-loved humectant, while cinnamon helps with eczema, acne, and cell turnover (even featured in Kate Somerville's cult-loved ExfoliKate). Enjoy the recipe below, and please save some for the holiday dishes.

HONEY CINNAMON FACE MASK

Ingredients
1 Tbsp honey
1 tsp cinnamon powder
1 tsp nutmeg powder
Directions
Mix all ingredients together in a bowl, then apply the mask to clean skin. Let it sit for approximately 20 minutes, then wash off with lukewarm water, gently rinsing in circular motions. Moisturize as usual and apply weekly. Because cinnamon brings blood to the surface of the skin, sensitive skin types should take precaution when attempting this recipe.

Beauty Detox: Skin-Plumping Lunch Plate

iStockphoto/Thinkstock
Easy to make, nutritious lunches are hard to find—especially when you're traveling, trying to get to school, or make it to work on time! Luckily, celebrity nutritionist Kimberly Snyder's recipe for an avocado tomato lunch plate mixes nourishing good-for-you beauty fats with delicious flavor. "Avocado is one of the best types of heart-healthy fat that you can put into your body," says Kim. "It provides moisturizing monounsaturated fats that plump and nourish skin with fiber and potassium—a mineral that balances the sodium in your diet, which in turn prevents high blood pressure.” Tomatoes also contain plenty of benefits, and are especially nutritious when eaten with avocados. “Tomatoes are a rich source of lycopene—a potent antioxidant that prevents cancer, heart disease, and high cholesterol,” explains Kim.

Avocado Tomato Lunch Plate

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 large roma tomato or 2 small plum tomatoes
  • 1 medium avocado
  • Handful of basil leaves
  • Black pepper to taste
  • Celtic sea salt to taste (optional)
  • ½ Tbsp olive oil (optional)
DIRECTIONS
Cut the tomato into thin slices, and arrange over a plate. Then, cut the avocado in half lengthwise using a large, sharp knife, and twist the halves to separate them. Lift out the pit with the knife and spoon the avocado out from each half of the peel. Carefully slice the avocado into strips.
Place the avocado strips on top of the tomato slices, and sprinkle the basil leaves on top. Drizzle the plate with olive oil and seasonings to taste.

A Natural Deodorant That Actually Works

Deodorant is one of those beauty products you just don’t mess around with. Either it does the job, or it’s in the trash. In most formulas, Aluminum is the ingredient responsible for keeping your armpits dry and happy, however, it’s been widely linked to Alzheimer’s and breast cancer. The science is murky on both ends, but in this day and age, do you really want to take the risk?
Let’s backtrack and play devil’s advocate for a second—yes, the claims are kind of terrifying to think about, but would you really forgo a sweat-tested formula for a low-tech alternative that doesn’t work as well? It’s especially difficult for those entrenched in the world of eco beauty; constantly battling between performance and purity. And unfortunately, most “earth-friendly” crystal sticks, gels, and powders available on the market haven’t yet come up to snuff. So when Soapwalla’s completely all-natural deodorant cream came across our desk, we were quite intrigued. Could a soupy paste, free from chemicals, petroleum, or aluminum, really provide the odor control of our high-performance forebears?

Unlike the solid swivel stick you’re used to, this deodorant demands a different kind of application, your finger. You slather a small scoop of this cream onto your armpits like you would moisturize your face, then wait for it to dry. It’s an odd feeling at first, but the slippery texture absorbs into the skin after a couple of minutes.
What actually makes this concoction so ecologically effective? It’s a blend of nature’s best absorbers. Corn starch, sodium bicarbonate, and kaolin clay all work to prevent excess moisture, while the heady blend of orange, tea tree, lavender, and peppermint oils give a pleasant scent to the olfactive-obsessed.
And it works. After a day of working, walking, and exercise, we gave our pits the sniff check, and lo and behold, didn’t smell a thing.

Where do Your Dark Spots Come From?

Ever feel relieved to see a pimple disappear then notice a dark spot forming underneath, or get frustrated at the marks that seem to appear overnight on your skin? Pigmentation is the skin’s way of protecting itself, but to the mirror, it’s just an unsightly annoyance. According to New York City-based dermatologist Anne Chapas, M.D., there are plenty of ways to rid yourself of these annoying spots, and it all starts with proper sun protection.
“The dark spot that forms when a pimple disappears is called post-inflammatory pigmentation,” explains Dr. Chapas. “Your skin has just been damaged and hurt, so the area is inflamed. Then, when it hits sunlight, the inflamed area immediately turns dark.” This intensity in color is caused by melanin, a molecule in your skin that turns brown when it is trying to protect itself. A tan is essentially melanin molecules changing color all over your body to protect your cells from damage—think of it as an external band-aid. In terms of treatment, there are a few options. “Never pick the pimple, this will increase the inflammation and pigmentation,” warns Dr. Chapas. “As soon as the skin has healed, apply SPF every day.”
And sunspots? Unfortunately they can’t be treated the same way as regular pigmentation (the damage is is more permanent!), so enlist the help of a laser or strong chemical peel. Of course, lightening serums and retin-A products do work to some extent, but at a much slower pace. And remember, sunscreen is your best friend.

Save Your Skin With These Stress-Free Tips

If winter has the blues, then autumn's sure has its doldrums. As soon as Halloween candy hits the shelves, it's off to the races with the hectic haze of the holiday season—cue stress, cue breakouts. Anxiety can suck on a surface level, but according to dermatologist and stress/skin expert Howard Murad, M.D., studies show that stress goes even deeper, releasing neuropathies (nerve dysfunctions) which can damage cellular membrane, break down our connective tissue, and cause a load of other problems which eventually end up on your face. Nothing's worth your skin sanity, so bear these stress management tips in mind whenever you're feeling a little mentally and facially flustered.

NUTRITION FIRST

When you replace a diet rich in whole foods and grains with highly processed foods, you're essentially giving the stress hormone cortisol a green light to skyrocket. A body in equilibrium needs the right nutrients and even a dose of good fats. "About two-thirds of our brains are composed of fat, and the protective sheath around communicating neurons is 70 percent fat," notes Dr. Murad. Get your share from omega-3 rich salmon, walnuts, flax seed, and olives. And whatever you do, don't skip breakfast—caffeine alone doesn't count.

UNPLUG AND CONNECT

"There’s an odd duality to being attached to machines that allow us to connect with others around the world in an instant," remarks Dr. Murad. And he's right—the internet is both a blessing and burden, a habit-forming stream of LOLcats and crux of relationships. Keep things in balance, and your skin will follow suit: take time in the week to turn off the phone, have a potluck with your friends, or finally pull out that book you've been aching to read.

20 MINUTES OF FITNESS A DAY—JUST DO IT.

We'll never get tired of hearing workout advice. "Exercising regularly nourishes the skin with oxygen while sweating flushes out toxins, and it also improves digestion, metabolism, and endocrine function," says Dr. Murad. We're not asking you to try for a half-marathon or sign up at a fancy gym. Your complexion will immediately reap the benefits of a 20-minute walk, an at-home dance session (highly recommended) or basic resistance training—whatever it takes to get you moving.

GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK

Whether utterly trashy television or an indulgent hobby, often times we feel ashamed for satisfying our guilty pleasures—stop that behavior! Life is short and life is fun. Work hard, feel accomplished, and if you want to splurge on that lipstick or get your Real Housewives on? Well, no one's stopping you.
